The enamel surface is applied by hand. Minor surface irregularities and unfinished edges are a normal result of the metal working and enamelling process. As with any kind of kitchen or dinnerware, some scratching and dulling an occur over time. All this adds the the distinctive character of quality enamelware. Enamel on steel is hard and strong, but like all good ceramic materials it will chip if handled too roughly. Chipping the outer layer can expose the steel beneath, which will naturally oxidise. The enamelware will still remain safe to use.
